You are better off walking into an Apple Store and have them look at the device and the full cable. (Bring both)
You see the charging cable may be perfectly OK and the charging port may be the culprit. However if they find corrosion at the port you will not get warranty service.
If you call Verizon at *611 or 1-800-922-0204 they will send you another device etc. But may say the issue is customer related and they will charge your account a huge sum of money saying it was your own doing. If they get the phone back at all which is a whole different issue and nightmare.
Go to the Apple Store save yourself a load of grief.
