My battery life does not last on my phone. If it is not connected to a charger i can watch the battery life tick down like a second hand on a clock. Is there a fix for this?

My phone works fine when i got it, but now i can not use it as i get about 5 min of use out of it before it shuts off. I have to carry a charger around with me at all times and find an outlet to charge it. It is unbearable, hopefully there is a fix as it wasn't always like this.
