Transferring service

So I just got my iPhone 5 (ordered from apple website) and I'm trying to get it set up with with Verizon and all that, I've been using an iPhone 4 and even after setting up my iPhone 5 with my apple id the 4 still seems to be the main phone.  Is there a step I've missed in order to switch it over?   Thanks in advance
