Use Upgrade from Another Family Plan

My mother and I are on completely different family plans. She's currently eligible for an upgrade and I am not. We both have basic phones.

I'm looking to get a new phone before I move and would like to get a smart phone, an iPhone (5 probably). Is it possible for me to use her upgrade now and then for her to use mine in 5 months? How will it affect her plan if we ordered a smartphone when she doesn't have a dataplan?

Thanks!

It will add a data plan to the account. However that data plan can be removed once she re-activates her basic phone and if it's done in the same day then you won't be charged for the data plan on the bill.

Yes, you can.  She would process the upgrade on her line and sign a new two year contract and the phone would have to be activated into her line initially.  She can then put her basic phone back into her line and give you the Iphone 5 to activate onto your line.

Can you speak to how activating a smartphone on someone who only wants a basic phone will affect her plan?

Can a verizon rep confirm this so I can mark it correct?

I'm not a Verizon rep, but it is correct. Just don't choose the Share Everything plan when doing the upgrade on her line(unless she wants the basic phone version of that plan when you're done!)

Just be aware insurance and the phone warranty DOESN'T transfer when move the device to a different account.  You are on your own if the phone breaks or stops functions.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Hi bczapla. I'm always swapping upgrades with other lines on my account to get the latest device. I know your situation is a bit different since you are on different accounts, but it can absolutely be done. Your mom would need to select current pricing during her upgrade (either leaving the same calling plan and adding on the $30 for 2GB data package or changing to a Share Everything plan) and activate the new phone on her line. Once it's been activated, she can then reactivate her old phone and the new phone would be free to be activated anywhere she wishes, even your account. Her account would be the one with the new contract end date and new upgrade eligibility date. But as Ann154 mentioned, the phone warranty and insurance does not transfer to different accounts and is only applicable to the original mobile number that makes the purchase. Is there a particular reason you're hoping to upgrade early? If you're having trouble with your phone I'd love to help get you through the next few months until your upgrade has arrived.

Thank you

I want to upgrade early because I'm moving to Manhattan in August for graduate school. My last phone decided to stop charging after about a year and a half so I'm back to my old phone from 2009. On top of that, I have a basic phone and I'm looking to get a smartphone before moving to the city. I'm not sure there's much you could do for me.
