Using iPhone 5 out of the US

I am planning to spend a the month of January in Costa Rica.  I have the iPhone 5 and would like to use it there.  I have seen online that there are SIM cards for sale in the airport that would allow me to use the phone there.  Do I simply but the SIM card and start using the phone?  I have never done this before so I was hoping I could get some help before I leave.  Thanks.

Sounds about right.

Keep in mind, when you use a local SIM card, you will have a local number.

Someone calling your Verizon number WILL NOT register with your phone while the local SIM card is in the phone.
