Why did I use so much data all the sudden?

I have had smartphones with Verizon for years. My last one was the iPhone 4. I never went over 1 GB data with that phone. This month, I upgraded to the 5S and I blew through almost 4 gigs in two weeks! I do not watch videos, listen to music, or download anything. My usage has not changed in any way whatsoever; I simply check mail and occasionally hit a search engine. What the hell is going on, Verizon??

Actually, my phone only has 3G. It must be the area I live in. And I have read numerous articles about inexplicably high data usage with the iPhone 5S and Verizon Wireless. Going from 1/2 a gig a month to essentially 8 gigs a month is not acceptable. There are many sites and blogs dedicated to this very problem. Get it together, Verizon.
