Why does my iPhone 5s drop to 1x when I make a call

This is normal.  All Verizon phones until just the most recent phones take all voice calls on the 1x network.   LTE and 3G are data only and the phone must switch to 1x to make a call. This is what changes with Advanced Calling, or VoLTE, which allows calls as data over LTE.
