Why is my device telling me it is not compatible?

after I unlocked my iphone3 5 from att, verizon is telling me it's not compatible after I input the IMEI on their activation page. What gives?

The GSM iPhone 5 (otherwise known as A1428) is designed for GSM carriers in the US and Canada, including AT&T. The device will notwork with the Sprint or Verizon CDMA network, regardless of LTE compatibility.
