I just bough a new iphone 5s for my son, it was working just fine. I updated the ios to 8.3, now it says no sim card, so I caanot send/receive calls or texts?

Congratulations on your new phone! We certainly want you having a working phone after a software update. The good news is this can be fixed. Please power off the phone, then remove the 4g Sim card, the steps are provided in the link below:

Wait a few seconds, put the Sim card back in and restart the phone. Let us know if the "no Sim card" error still shows up.
