iPhone 5C now showing Extended LTE and getting hot during calls

I recently upgraded my iPhone 5C to iOS8.1 and noticed three things:

  1.  Top bar shows "Extended LTE" where it used to show "Verizon LTE".

  2.  Phone gets hot during calls.

  3.  Battery life is somewhat shorter.

I live in ZIP 28902 and my house has not moved a bit.

Thanks in advance for any help in solving this problem.

willijo, I know that these would concern me just the same after installing the update. The good news is that it’s not a device issue, so no worries.  The 8.1 update just changed how the device reflects Verizon and Extended banners. As well, if connected to a network extender in the area this will also change the banner information. Is the device hot to the touch? Does it overheat at random or when in use?

Hi Adam

The phone only gets hot after about 15 minutes into a long call.

I presume this is why my battery life is shorter.

Thanks

It is normal for the phone to get a bit hot, especially if on a long call, or plugged in, or if other services are running in the background. It just shouldn't get overly hot, especially to the touch. Just in case, try running the Reset Network Settings option: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings- Just be sure to re-enter the password for any local WiFi locations you use. This will reset and forget those networks.

Keep us posted, willijo. Thank you.
