iPhone SIM Activation Issue

I brought an iPhone 5 at full retail price at the Apple Store. I tried to activate the phone by using VerizonWireless.com and going to Switch Device. When I was prompted to enter in the SIM card ID, it told me the ID was not compatible with my device.

Do I need to exchange the phone at the Apple Store?
