If I have imessages turned on, do I need SMS turned on, too? What about MMS?

Yes, SMS should be on so you can receive text from non-Apple users.
There is no separate setting for MMS. Media from iMessage users will be iMessage and everything else will go through regular MMS channels. I do believe data must be on.

Yes, SMS should be on so you can receive text from non-Apple users.
