My iPhone 6 was stolen. Can it be used again after I locked and erased it?

So, my 6 was stolen off me at the mall. I locked it with Find My iPhone and subsequently erased it with it as well. I never filed with the police because I went and got a replacement through the insurance on my plan. Is my stolen device essentially just an iPod for them now, or can they do something shady with it?

It's just an iPod now. It can't be activated on any account.

Understandably.

You can report a device lost or stolen on your My Verizon, but it also does it when you file an insurance claim. It's best to mark it as lost or stolen ASAP; that's just so someone doesn't remove your SIM card and try to use it in a different device, or if your phone was unlocked run up your data.
