Why can't I use data during a phone call?

I had a Galaxy and this wasn't an issue before. What happened? Is this just a Verizon iPhone restriction? This really should be advertised. I would have never switched to Apple otherwise.

Do you have Advanced Calling enabled on the phone and also in My Verizon under features and apps?
