Transfer of messages

Is there a way to transfer messages from one phone to another.  Example IPhone 6 to IPhone7?

Back up your iPhone 6 to iCloud backup or to iTunes. Then restore that backup to the iPhone 7. Messages will transfer.

I did so.  However, I could not find the messages on iCloud or iTunes.  Is there a setting on my phone I need to set?
