Data usage

What's included in "data" -- texting, online searches, phoning, photos & videos, reading book in Apple Books, playing solitaire?  Trying to figure out why I'm running out of gbs.

Your phone tell you what is using data.  Go to settings/cellular and scroll down. It will tell you what apps are using your data.  That is very helpful to understand.  You can reset the counters all the way at the bottom.

blue message texting, online searches, use data.   Phone calls don't.  Green messages don't.  Looking at stuff already downloaded to you phone doesn't.  Getting a new app does.  Playing online does.  Playing video from you tube does.  Watching a video on your phone that you took doesn't,  unless it went to the cloud for backup and needs to come back to the phone.

if you don't want to use data, you can turn data off and only turn it on when you want.

being on Wi-Fi saves you from using your plan data.

🤯.   12 years after iPhone debut and some are still new to smartphones.

Any application with a number under it has used that much data.

A sudden increase in usage can be alarming and I'm here to help. Emails, small photos, basic web pages - those are all measured in kilobytes. So in most cases they don't affect your usage a great deal.

If you enjoy downloading songs and streaming video, you've taken the next step to megabytes. The average song takes 5 MB of data to download, and streaming video uses roughly 350 MB an hour: http://spr.ly/66031E3sU

Data Utilization is a free online tool that helps you understand how your device uses data. It divides your data usage into general categories, and estimates your data usage in each category:http://spr.ly/66091E3sv me know if this answers your question. AyaniB_VZW

Keep in mind that regardless if it is 12 yrs after iPhone debut or 50 yrs after iPhone debut, there will ALWAYS be those who will be new to smartphones. For example, someone getting old enough to get their first phone(if it is a smartphone) will be new to smartphones. Until phones are built in to the human body, there will always be those who will be "new" to smartphones.

Additionally, simply because someone has a smartphone does not mean they know or more likely care about how "data" works. Someone who has had a smartphone for years but has recently moved to their own account and is now financially responsible for their own data could likely be asking the same type of question.Smiley Happy
