New iPhone 8 data usage
TALLHARPER
Newbie

i bought a new iPhone 8 last week one day before my data resets for the month.  Suddenly this week I am told that I have used all my data for the month in just one week. Since I haven't used my phone any more than I usually do , which is usually about 4.5 gigs of my 6 gig limit in a month, I don't understand how it is all gone already.  This is very frustrating for me as I don't have any other means of communication with family, friends and work than my cell. I currently pay $48.40 for the 6gig plan and am concerned that I am being forced to pay nearly double that for a new plan with more data. I want to know why this is happening.

Interesting. I've noticed when someone gets a new device the usage does tend to go up but that is a lot of data in a short amount of time.

I forget if you can restore from backup via cellular. I'm guessing you must be on Wi-Fi. I'm restore my iPhone X from backup right now but I just looked and it is on Wi-Fi. If it somehow restored from backup via cellular that could contribute towards the spike. It doesn't mention it here: iCloud: Restore or set up your iOS device from iCloud

You can login to My Verizon and look at your data usage. I'd try to look and see when the data is being used to pinpoint what could be causing the difference.

I recommend to users to turn off background app refresh if data is happening overnight. Just search Background in Settings at the top of the screen on your iPhone and tap on Background App Refresh. I realize these settings could come over from your old iPhone if you restored from backup just offering a suggestion.

TALLHARPER, congratulations on your new phone purchase. We truly hope that you are enjoying it. That certainly is a spike in usage I know that I would want to get to the bottom of this. What make and model did you previously have? When activating your phone were you connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data? In viewing your Settings, Cellular, do you find that all of your apps are set to update over Cellular? If so, you may want to turn some of these off. Also, under each of these items you will see the amount of data that the app has used which can help determine where that data is going.
