Cloud contacts backup failed, solved for me

I was getting the above message on my Nexus 6 frequently. Then I got a message from VZ notifying me my Cloud account was being closed to inactivity. When I checked my Cloud contacts it hadn't been updated for a long time. After reading a few posts, I tried the Settings>Apps>Cloud>Storage>CLEAR CACHE method. The contacts are now current.
