Not necessarily. If you have insurance or Extended Warranty it could still be covered. As long as there is no physical or water damage it can be warranty claimed.

Manufacturer Warranty is 1 year, if he got a Certified Like New Replacement it comes with a 90 day warranty, if he has Total Mobile Protection it's covered as long as he continues to pay for the insurance.
