At a resort just outside Yosemite NP, this was the only coverage available. Is this part of the usual plan, or do we pay extra for 'extended digital coverage'?

You were roaming on the extended network of other carrier. Depending on your voice plan, you won't be charged for roaming. Users with the Nationwide plans won't incur roaming charges.
