Can I use the GPS feature to locate my lost device?

I just lost my iPhone and was told that I am able to GPS search it and that will help locate it's possible whereabouts. Any help?

Log in to iCloud.com on a computer and login with your AppleID.  If you had find my iPhone activated (it is by default) and the phone is not out of battery, and it has an Internet or cell connection, you can locate it.
