Hi i have a iphone 4 and i check my data regularly, and i got up this morning and my data went from like 100 mb last night to 4.1 gb. What in the world happened, and i use wifi at all time, it says it was all sent data, that's impossible.

Same thing at 4:31 am we had a data spike of 1.5 gig that blew through all are data for the month and we are only 10 days into the billing cycle.  Pretty much got a your screwed from Customer Service.  Have no clue why I put myself through this.  I've been with Verizon for 5+ years and pretty much get the middle finger whenever something is screwed up.

I'm having the same problem. I've reached my data limit this month and have never even come close to reaching it before. When I called they said it was my fault and I was somehow using more data. However, I'm always connected to wifi. I finally just had to turn my cellular data off until the next billing cycle. Why is this suddenly happening to so many of us?

If you upgraded to iOS 6 there are issues where like on the iphone 5 if cellular data is left on when wi-fi is being used, the cellular radio will still be used. This was supposed to be a "feature" in anticipation of carrier wi-fi/cellular integration but all it does is run up data bills. Supposedly on the verizon iPhone 5 an update has fixed it.

But an overnight surge on the order of 4 gig is quite unusual even if the pipes are software-bonded. But verizon won't take responsibility for anything and suspend charges pending investigation because all these data spikes make them tons of money, and investigations cost them money and dry up these windfall revenue streams.

Work around: Turn the data ON, use it, turn it OFF. When it's OFF, use Wi-Fi. That is what I do, even on my androids. No data surprises.

Man, am I glad I've never bought into the Apple hype.

reply about data spike:  I too am having data spike!!!  For 11 months I used around +or- 1 GB.  I used navigator 1 to 4 times

per month and the"Weather Channel"  very often rainy season inS.C. Summer watching the moving Doppler Radar.  Still about 1 GB.  then in Aug or Sept they changed weather channel looks home page and the Navigator changed to show each directional change.  I was immediately cautious about the navigator being like that as it would tempt me to keep it on till my destination.  So, I would hit the home button in bottom center till i got closer to destination so, as not to use so much data.  Then 2 wekks into my month verizon e-mail says 52% of data already used and I had used navigator only one time and weather channel maybe twice. As far as e-mail I would check for e-mail and not read it unless very important and if not important I would trash it.  I ended using over 4 Gb ..from Sept 15th to Oct15th.   So, I checked e-mail less frequent, less weather channel and navigator only once.  Then 10 dAYS into  month Verizon alerts me 52% used . So, No weather , NO navigator,Little less e-mail then 14 days into month Verizon text  75% used. At 16 days into month (last Wednesday. the 30th. I call 611 and ask Question WHY. Answer U are going to home screen but not closing the app> MY question is why not for 11 months but now it is a problem --No answer except You are not closing app or e-mail by using the home button on bottom.  HOW Do U Close app properly??  hit home button twice and 4 apps will appear and wiggle.  Baloney  Verizon is crooking Us!!!!!!!!!  Call 611 everyday till we get a legitimate answer why DATA SPIKE!!!!

Maybe someone can clear this up for me...

I had an 8Gb shared data plan i started in february. Every month the total used was approximately 500Mb. I decided after seeing that I used so little I would drop the data to 2Gb. I did that June 3rd. On the 4th i got a text message saying that I have used 50% (1Gb) of my prorated data allowance. On the 5th I got a text message saying I've used 75% (1.5Gb).  This morning I got another text saying I used 90%. I have never had this problem until I dropped to 2Gb.  According to MyVerizon, I've only used 415Mb of data total to date, but my phone says I've sent 100Mb and received 1.6Gb. What is going on?!?

What I think is going on is the NSA 's downloading of your information is being charged to your accounts , OOPS , unforseen consequences for having the best National Security Agency . Don't that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside ?

Did it say SPECIFICALLY those amounts or just the % used? Because if you failed to backdate the data change or start it at the start of new billing period your data will be prorated. For example if you made change halfway through your billing period you would only get 1 GB of those 2 GB and when you receive a 50% alert it would be because you sued 500 MB of that 1 GB. When does your billing period start?
