I found that even connected to wifi my data usage continues . Spent month out of town , used wifi 90% of the time . I generally use 2gb but had to add 2 more before month ended . Cannot get answers from Verizon . Anyone with similar usage problem

What phone do you have? The phones will have data counters that tell you which apps are using the data. There are also settings on some phones that can allow the phone to use cellular data when connected to a slow or suboptimal wifi connection, such as wifi assist with the iphone.

Look at the data counters on the phone, see what is using the data. Let us know what phone you have so we can give advice on what other settings to look at.

if you have iphone it may b that.

if wifi is slow then it will use cellular data I think its also on android phone but for that you have to select that option

I have two iPhone 5's

Is the data counter an app I need for these types of phones ?

Yes the option to use cellular in connection to wifi is on these phones and is turned off .

Note : if I'm at home using my wifi my phone in comparison to wife's doesn't use data as much , hers begins to start using data like crazy but if I'm with her away from home my phone eats the data not hers . I know this makes no sense but it's true I have watched the usage on my Verizon which separates the phones and tablet usages . We do not even try using tablets , they remain turned off completely at this point

Just another note of appreciation for the help I'm beginning to get , you guys are great at responding .

Thank you , it's become a trying experience . We have had Verizon since hurricane Charley hit our home in Florida and Verizon came in and set up Communication's for our police departments and emergency responders as well as regular customers . But only Verizon customers which is understandable

GO to settings, cellular and scroll down. You will see apps with numbers indicating data used for each app. What app is using the data unexpectedly?  You can scroll to bottom and reset to zero, so you can monitor going forward.

Guys I think we have the answer , our Apple updates automatically turn cellular use back on for all the apps on the phone and turn in let run in background .

Simple fix - settings - scroll to bottom and turn off wifi assist .

Second thing is go to settings - general - background assist - turn it off also .

Now it cannot continue running if I'm using it and get s call when with these in it continues to run run run until you turn off or go back and exit the app , something we think we do when we answer a call .

Thus has to be done with every update that of corse we have to update to keep system running properly . Just remember to turn these two items off when you update .

Will give data usage update Friday , I'm at 1.6 now

No kidding. I used my wifi every time I was home or at a restaurant and went from 12 GB to 22 GB in one month. I have never used 22 GB ever but for 2 months reached my limit of 18 GB (2 lines) with in 14 days of the billing month. I don't know how Verizon gets away with it
