Does Verizon have coverage in St. Croix?

We are heading to St. Croix in a few weeks and have been told that Verizon does not work well there (it is largely AT&T). Had Verizon established any service there recently? Can I put an AT&T SIM card in my iPhone (that is with Verizon) while I am there?
