How do I get device to stay on so I can update?

Here's what happened. Clicked for latest update. Clicked on "agree" to terms. Little wheel spun. Next thing I see is black screen with iTunes blue symbol in middle up arrow underneath and a symbol that looks like "plug me into outlet." Then phone turns off. I manually turn on. Apple appears, then repeat of iTunes, etc., and device turns off again. This all happens within the span of 5-7 seconds. Successfully updated on my iPhone. This is my husband's. Don't understand at all.  Any help you can give I'd appreciate.

I always leave it plugged into the power outlet. In fact many people will tell you this is what manufacturers recommend.

After you go to update to what ever version it is, you accept via clicking agree, and agree again.

You then leave the iPhone alone, it will cycle through the update screens, and it takes some time to do so. My recommendation is do not update through iTunes but over the air using wifi.

When it completes you will get a Hello screen. you then complete the update process.

http://www.apple.com and check their community help forum to see if your issue has a solution other than what I told you.
