How does one go about moving an iPhone 6 from ATT to Verizon?

How does one go about moving and iPhone 6 form ATT to Verizon?  I see mixed comments on how to do this.

Go to a Verizon corporate store, and ask them to start the port in process.  DON'T cancel the line from AT&T; the port will automatically take care of that.  (This assumes you want to keep the same number)

If you don't care to keep the same phone number, you can just start a new account with a new number at Verizon and just cancel the AT&T account on your own.
