How to switch from a Droid to an iPhone?

I bought my Droid 4 back in April and it's alright, but I plan to switch to an iPhone 5 when it finally comes out. I bought the Droid as an upgrade and won't be eligible for another one until September 2013, though I know that's really not an issue as I can switch phones regardless, as long as I'm not canceling my contract. My plan includes the promotion of the 4GB of data per month for $G LTE phones. Now, rumor has it the iPhone 5 will be 4G LTE capable, so that assuages that kink.

I plan to at least get $100-$200 through a buy back program for my Droid to put towards the iPhone. Now, would I be able to get the iPhone for the $399 price or would I have to pay full retail?

Did you get your Droid 4 for a subsidized price in April (i.e. did you sign a new two year contract)?   If so, it's 20 months from then before you can upgrade your phone at a subsidized price, so you have to get the iPhone 5 at full retail (from Verizon or somewhere else), unless you want to add another line, in which case you can start a new 2 two contract but get the subsidized phone.

If you buy it at full price, as you suggest, there shouldn't be issues simply activating it in place of the droid 4 and keeping your existing plan.

Yes, I signed the new two year contract. At that, I just figure I'll wait a couple months and opt for a refurbished one from Amazon or Apple.com. But ugh, $850.

Are you on a single plan, or are there others on the plan? If there are more than just you, if any other line is eligible or soon will be, you could transfer the upgrade from that line to yours, and then get it at the subsidized rate.

unfortunately, you will be stuck paying full retail price. also, iphones hold there value VERY well, so i suspect that even after it's been out for a few months, the best you will find online will be $500-600 for a used one (if you're lucky). your only other option is to add a line or do what droid usrr mentioned (if that's possible for you?). when you do it though, pay close attention to your contract, as adding a line, or upgrading another line "could" change your contract. i'd hate to see you lose the 4gb promotional data plan. if you buy one at full retail or a used one and then activate it, it won't affect your contract.
