Is the iPhone 5 unlocked for GSM in USA

Everything I am reading says that the iPhone 5 is unlocked for GSM and they are required to by law (FCC). Has anyone tried a ATT or T-mobile nano sim in iPhone in USA to verify ? Asking since I want to be able to sell my phone and market it to all carriers

My coworker has Verizon iPhone 5 and confirmed SIM unlocked for us in India no issues.
