Locating a stolen iphone

If cell phones can be used to locate missing persons, why can't a cell phone be located in the same way?  My iphone was recently stolen and I had never set up the 'find my phone' app or my icloud acct.

Well of course!  But that's not the question.  Cell phones have been used to locate missing persons before there were any apps.  The question is...why can't that still be done?  Does anyone know?  And if so how?

If the Police thought that your missing phone was as important/valuble as a missing persons life then they could justify using that system to track your missing phone.  I happen to agree that a missing phone is not cause for the Police to waste the extensive resources needed to track and recover using the GPS system.  Especially when the phone was not important enough to the owner to install/utilize a FREE tracking application.

Well thanks for that.  It's a given that it was a dumb-ass thing to do not to enable the tracking application.  It's nice that you and a lot of other people get some kind of vicarious satisfaction knowing that someone else has to pay because they didn't jump thru the hoops they could have.  I for one can't wait until America reaches the totally intolerant and unforgiving future it's so rapidly approaching.  Sick as that is, let's move on.

Obviously, our overburdened police department isn't about to get involved with this crime.  And like you, they can just shrug it off as 'my fault' and let the one who stole it off.  And of course I knew that which is why I haven't called them and am asking questions in this forum.  But if the police can track it, so can apple or any third party.  And that's really what I am getting at here.  Maybe someone who doesn't already know everything is out there and could help me out.  Or maybe there just isn't anything I can do about my stolen iPhone.

Let's recap.

1) we have eliminated the police as a source of possible help.  As the previous reply points out, they have a big fat excuse not to do anything about this crime because I could have enabled an app that may or may not have helped to find out who stole the phone or where it is.  Besides, the police are busy collecting traffic tickets which is a much more lucrative use of their time and more profitable for their business.  Revenue is up for the police INC.  Yeayyyy!

2) at least one other forum user has jumped at the opportunity to rub my face in doggie doo for being so stupid as to not have enabled the tracking app.  Maybe I didn't read the post so carefully but I don't remember them really addressing the question.

So we still hope to find someone that actually knows something worth sharing here.  Is there a third party or an application or a service that can track my phone?  Is there a stolen iPhone list somewhere that I can put the phone serial # on that will prevent the thief from activating and using my phone?

I do not know if Apple has the app, (I doubt it) but if it was a Droid phone, you could download to your home PC Plan B, to track it. As long as it is on and data and GPS is running

Thank you.  GPS and data are enabled.  But I can tell the phone is off now so it's either been turned off or the battery had died.  If the battery had died there still may be enough power to enable GPS but I don't know.  I'm writing it off as lost.  I may not have enabled the 'find my phone' app but I did buy the comprehensive insurance that covers loss and theft so that takes the sting out of it.

Still a deductible, but not as bad as having to foot for a full priced new phone

I did look and Plan B is not available for the iPhone

Do you have insurance? Vzw insurance is $169 /$199 depending on what amount of gigs you have.

Thanks Gina but I think you actually have to buy the insurance before your phone is stolen or lost.  In any case, I did and so I do have insurance.
