My iPhone 5c has a lock with circle icon on it. I read that you have to swipe on the bottom, to get rid of it. But there is nothing there. Am I missing something?

I can definitely help you resolve this! When you swipe up from the bottom, this opens the Control Center. From there, check to see if the padlock icon is white. If so, click to disable. This setting disables the portrait mode lock, so your phone will rotate into landscape.
