My sister-in-law gave my daughter her old iPhone 4. She upgraded to the iPhone 4S because her on/off button was stuck (it is completely inoperable). My daughter was just going to use it as an iPod (not a phone) so it met her needs. The phone itself (with the apps, camera, etc) works fine.
HOWEVER...I received it in the mail today, charged it, & went to get on it...it was locked with a passcode. My sister-in-law hasn't used this iPhone in almost a year & has no clue what it could be. We've tried what she thought it could be, the 9999, the last 4 digits of the phone #, we've tried everything & it keeps locking us out for hours.
I've researched on youtube, et al about how to bypass the passcode but it requires the use of the on/off button and the home button...but since I can't use the on/off button...I can't do what they're suggesting.
When I plug it up to iTunes, it gives me an error message that the phone is locked & I need to submit the passcode....which brings me back to square 1.
I want to avoid taking it to Verizon because I'm sure they'll reset it (ie, wipe it), which would take away all the great apps my sis-in-law put on it.
So my question to you fine folks....do you have any further suggestions?
Thanks in advance!!!!

To keep the apps you just need the apple id even if You dont back up the phone. You can back it up to I cloud with wifi and then restore the phone. Do you have wifi around?

Aarahblaykekain, that's a great conundrum you have there! The best way to reset the phone without using the password would be putting the iPhone in Recovery mode. Connect the phone to the computer, press and hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons for about 20-30 seconds until Recovery mode pops up on the computer. All info will be wiped, but if your sister in law provides you her Apple ID, that will restore the applications.
I hope that helps!
