My phone won't do anything unless it's connected to wifi

I've only had the phone for about 10 months, and yesterday I accidentally left it at home while I was at work. When I got home, I noticed that I couldn't send any text messages until I was within range of our house wifi network. Since I was home for the night, I didn't notice anything else, it was working fine. Then, this morning, I tried going on twitter, checking my email, making a phone call, and sending texts while I was on the train. I couldn't do any of them. Nothing worked. At work, connected to wifi again, it's fine. So anyone have any idea what's going on here?

Hi dbd19!

Let's get that data working for you! I'm so sorry for any inconvenience...from what you describe, it seems as if you have turned off cellular data. This would explain why you can only connect to Wifi. Please go to settings/cellular/cellular data and make sure that it's turned on.

I disagree with Christina.

We just got off the phone from an hours long call with Verizon to figure out why my husband's phone works and mine doesn't. 

My phone usually has to use the wifi network to receive or make phone calls. When the cellular network does "work" it cuts out, has bad reception, and drops calls frequently.

After our hours on the phone escalating to specialists etc we were told it is because I have a 4G phone. They are sending us a 4G network extender that apparently has to use our wifi to work... not sure how that will be better than using WiFi calling, but we will see. 

It didn't make sense to me because we are in an area without 5G. The best he could explain is that we have a 4G network and 4G phone, but that Verizon has "upgraded" our plan to a 5G plan which makes it not work for me! Some upgrade. So now they are sending me this 4G network extender. 

Seems to me Verizon is patching in to our wifi service to patch a problem of their own making in my downgraded "5g" service plan.

We're sorry to hear you're experiencing issues with service at your home, chip1brown. We always want to do all we can to help and would like to apologize for the confusion with your plan. Our current plans offer a 5G connect if you have a 5G device at no addtional charge. All plans will also work with your 4G device and in 4G LTE areas. Your plan should not be causing issues with your calls. Depending on your location, indoor service can be unstable due to factors outside our control such as line of sight with towers, foliage, congestion, and the foundation of the building. When this happens, we do recommend using Wi-Fi to assist with calls and data. If Wi-Fi Calling does not help, we do offer a Network Extender to boost the signal indoors. I'm so glad to hear this is being sent for you. Definitely test this out and let us know if you continue to have trouble. -Danielle
