New iPhone 5 on Verizon - can't text another verizon iphone 5

My mother and I bought new iphone 5 yesterday at Verizon.  We are testing the phones but each text I send to her is 'not delivered'.  I was able to send a text to another family member but she was not.  I've googled this and it seems to be a problem without a fix.  Should we return phones or does someone know what's happening?  Thanks.

If you got the phones from a Verizon store I suggest taking it back and showing them the issue. It would seem you would have done all this testing at the store.
