Not enough space to update phone

We have the Apple5s. We have erased as much a possible from the phone. It is 16 GB - has music and photos on it. (About 300 songs and 150 photos.) Plus 2-3 apps that don't take up much apps.When we go to update the message that there is not enough space to update. We have rebooted countless time and followed numerous trouble shooting steps. any suggestions?

when was the last time you deleted any of your message history within the Messaging app
