Ship date vs delivery date

I ordered iPhone 5 at store on 9/18. Was told at store "delivery" by 10. Email confirmation I have says "delivery" by 10/5. When I checked on shipping since I haven't received another email I was told ship by 10/5. Big difference between ship and delivery. I called Verizon and they basically said they could do nothing about it. REALLY? They also said they probably know there is a glitch, but there still isn't anything they could do about it.
