Good news! You won't be paying anything extra anymore for visual voicemail as its included with Apple phones 🙂

Here are instructions:

Ok. So I have to call Verizon to get them to stop charging me for that service. I have the visual van now on my phone, but I prefer reading my texts . How do I do that?

The feature you were paying for should have automatically dropped when your iPhone was activated because it's not compatible.

Do you mean how visual voicemail programs can convert the audio into a readable text? There is nothing currently built into the iPhone that does that, but I've read Apple is developing a Siri function to do that. There may be (free or paid) apps in the store you can try that could do that in the meantime tho.
