Volume control and phone mechanism on headset is not working

When I connect my headset on my new iPhone5 and attempt to adjust the volume on Pandora, there is no response. So, I tried to answer a call using my headset also, and the phone does not respond to the control on the headset. Do I have to install and app on my phone for the headset to be recognized?

We want you to enjoy your new device and all of its' wonderful capabilities madean! Have you tested the headset with any other apps besides Pandora? Have you tried using the master volume with the side keys? Will they respond. Lastly, have you tested Pandora and calls without the headset plugged in? These questions will help us determine if it is handset or accessory related.
