Why am I incurring data usage while connected to WIFI?

I called customer service to find out why I am incurring data usage while connected to my home wifi. The representative couldnt explain at all why, but told me in order to fully connect to my home wifi, I have to turn off Data Usage on my phone. That is an extra step I should not have to do. Most of these are minor pings, but are occurring while I am asleep. I ended up getting frustrated and ending the call as I couldnt get any assistance about why this is happening, just ways to try to avoid it. "Are all of your apps closed?" "Switch data usage off when on wifi." "Your phone will choose the most powerful signal to use, not always will it use wifi."

If my phone will choose the more powerful signal, and it isnt wifi, then why am I not always incurring data usage?

Seems like a nickel and dime scam to get customers close to going over their data plans. If I go over by just 0.00001 kb of data because of this, Verizon is going to have an issue about these "pings"

This concern is very valid on your end. I would be concerned as well if I was seeing data usage while connected to WiFi. What make/model phone do you have? Did this recently start happening? We are here to help, so please share.

I have an iPhone 6, and I did just recently notice, but I have not gone back through to check previous statements.

The breakdown of data usage in question is all happening between the hours

of 11pm and 7:30am. For example, looking at last month alone, the data used

was almost 1/4 of a gigabyte while I was on my home wifi network. This

happened every day of last months billing cycle. The site you gave also did

not break it down to what apps or pages are being used at the given times.

This is the data usage in question.

Was this while it was plugged into power charging? When the iPhone goes to sleep, it disconnect wifi. Any incoming data will go through cellular. There are reports if it is connected to power, the wifi stays active.

I am having the exact same problem on all of my verizon phones within the family.

This has been going on with others in this community for over a year. THere are other threads on this problem.

Why is Verizon having some app doing this every 1/2 hour or so. Not a lot of data but WE, the customer, should not be charged for this.

I have asked others with Verizon and they are all having the same issue.

My husband has Kyocera dura force. Data disabled at night and still using data
