Why is one iPhone “extended”, another not?

My iPhone SE (v 12.4) is showing “extended LTE” 2 bars, with no data available. My wife’s Se v 12.3.1 shows Verizon LTE, 2 bars, gets data just fine.
why can’t I get data/internet?

It is impportant that you are able to stay connected, Salsdad. Are both iPhone SE devices model A1662? Was the device that is now showing Extended LTE performing normally prior to the iOS update to 12.4? Is this happening in every location you visit?
