Why won't my phone show voicemail notifications?

When someone leaves me a voicemail, it does not show up as a notification.  The only way I know I have a voicemail is I have to hold down the #1 key on my keypaid and wait for voicemail to tell me if I have new voicemails or not.  Why isn't it showing up under the voicemail tab? Under voicemail, it will say no voicemails when actually I do have them.
