Had no problem until today accessing my gmail account. When I check for email the screen displays "checking for email" and does not stop displaying "checking for email". I cannot get current email on my iphone.

Lets show that email who's boss, jczarx!
Can you login to the email from a computer like normal? Do you have other email accounts on your iPhone? I recommend removing the email account (steps http://bit.ly/Tn74H6) then readding to email back to the device under the same Settings > Email, Contacts, Calendar section. This will allow you to regain access to the email account. Keep me posted!

I can access my gmail normally from any PC. I attempted to delete the
gmail account as you demonstrated and it wouldn't let me. It displayed
account already exists, would you like to edit? or cancel. I use the
gmail 2 step password verification if that info helps you figure this out.
I was able to access my gmail on my iphone for about 2 months after
initiating the 2 step verification process.
