how can I decrease data use on my IPhone?

I've had my phone for one week and have gone over my data usage.  How can I decrease data usage. I have not used the internet at all yet.

I'd say go int to Settings and turn off App Background Refresh for apps you don't need refreshing themselves, turn off location services for apps that don't need your location.  This article provides a lot of good tips on how to save data.
