Make sure it is charged. Hold down the home button and the sleep/wake button together for 10 seconds and then let go.

MY son had this problem because he dropped his phone a few times. Even if in a case and not cracked, the phone is not meant to be dropped without eventual damage to the internal connections. One of the critical ones is to the battery.
one minute his battery says full charge, then it drops to the red zone.
i Hope in your case the phone is just not charged.
