iPhone 8 plus - storage issues

I think it has been about a year since I bought this phone through Verizon and have had no issues until the other day. I have gotten a "storage full" or "storage almost full" alert about four times now, but when i check my iphone storage, it says i have 31GB available. However, when I plug my phone into a computer and open the folder to view files, the storage meter is red and it says 5GB available. I am very confused and don't know if this is a bug or what. I am 31.5GB of 64GB used at the moment. I have deleted old pictures and videos and have also deleted everything out of my recently deleted folder. Anyone else have a similar issue?
