pre-order a phone before its release and still have to wait?

What is the purpose of pre-ordering a phone before its release date if I'm still going to have to wait for it?  I pre-ordered an Iphone 6 Plus and now being told it MIGHT ship before November.  This is ridiculous.  I haven't even been given a specific ship date.
