syncing contacts from Backup assistant

backed up contacts through backup assistant before purchasing new phone..  Lost contacts after upgrading to new os.  purchased new phone.  used iTunes to sync.  still no contacts.  tried syncing like online support said.  244 contacts it says but it did not sync
