return security deposit

I paid a security deposit to NJ Bell Telephone when I opened my account decades ago.  I just closed my account and Verizon won't refund the deposit.  They claim that deposits are returned after 1 year.  That may be the case today, but wasn't necessarily the policy back then.   They claim they don't owe me any money.  I think my money got lost in the phone company mergers and acquisitions.  How do I get Verizon to either return my money or show evidence that it was returned?
