Calling on a US phone while in Europe

Has any one traveled to Europe with their US phone and made calls in Europe and back to the US using the Verizon TravelPass? Are calls from the US phone made exactly the same as when we are in the US calling Europe, or do we need to learn how to drop the country code sequence? Thanks.
