I'm just wondering why in this era of remarkable communications capabilities that I cannot forward my home phone from another phone other than the home phone. This capability would be so convenient when I forget to forward the home phone and I've already left home to go on a trip.

more than likely... security reasons
you wouldn't want anyone to be able to forward your calls to anywhere....

Verizon DOES offer a capability to activate Call Forwarding via another phone (I used it yesterday when someone parked their vehicle against a utility pole causing a cable break.) From my cell phone I was able to activate Call Forwarding of my home phone to my cell phone.
In some Verizon areas the service is called "Ultra Forward", in places it may be called "Remote Activation of Call Forwarding", or something similar.
