No audible notification on Land Line phone for Voice Mail

I'm a new VZ customer. After a long drawn out debacle getting phone, long distance and Internet from VZ to work, I still have a problem with my voice mail.  There is no audible notification that I have messages waiting for me in voice mail when I pick up my phone. I've tried several option setting inside the VM menu but I still don't have any way to know if I have a message unless I dial into VM.  I would appreciate any help getting this working.
